Winter is just around the corner, which means it’s time to crack open some fun, fresh thrillers, or chillers, if you will. Horror has always been fortunate to have an abundance of winter gems. We see people being hunted in the snow all the time. We even have classics like Wrong And The thing (1982), which are always available on VOD and worth every penny. I also highly recommend checking it out The Lodge if you want something somber after rewatching those two for the billionth time. This constant stream of atmospheric dread is one of the things I look forward to every year. So of course I had to make it a streaming guide issue. I also needed it to be a little worse by making sure all the characters were stuck in horrible weather with their big bad. After all, what’s the point if death isn’t almost guaranteed?
With that in mind, I went looking for five cooling machines that will make your blood run cold. They also happen to stream the usual suspects, because our wallets could use a rest too. I hope you find something that will give you the holiday spirit. Or at least make you realize that the bad weather you’re experiencing isn’t as bad as what some of these movies serve up on an ice-cold platter.

A gang of vampires attacks a town in Alaska while it is plunged into darkness for a month. This 2007 gem made vampire movies cool again, and I love it so much! It also made my generation’s obligatory shared crush on Josh Hartnett even worse. Melissa George and Danny Huston join our teen heartthrob in this snowy carnage. This film is wonderfully cruel and perhaps one of the most brutal vampire films set in the snow. 30 days of night is also one of the many horror scenarios that I would not survive. Between the freezing temperatures and the rude vampires, I’d just give up. I complain a lot about Midwest winters, but watching this movie reminds me that Alaska has it much worse. If you’re a completionist, Pluto TV has the sequel 30 Night Days: dark days.

Three people are stranded on a chairlift as a ski resort closes during a heavy storm. They find themselves having to make some harrowing decisions as they try to avoid freezing to death. If I were a skier, Frozen It would scare me enough to give that up. In this survival chiller, Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers play the three unluckiest people on this mountain. They may have it worse than any of the other characters on the list, as they aren’t even given shelter from the elements. Watching them freeze is bad enough, but for these children it gets even worse. This movie is called a psychological horror thriller, but I think it’s more like psychological torture. If you try to view this snowy hell, keep your eyes peeled for a Kane Hodder sighting before the snow hits the fan.

Tensions rise between an environmental activist and the chief of an oil crew in the Arctic. However, they discover that even scarier problems await them once Mother Nature unleashes her wrath on their isolated base. As a millennial you are playing catch up Larry Fessenden‘s filmography, I was happy to check this out film out this month. Not only is it an environmentally conscious chiller, but it also just gets weird enough to fit my vibe. The cast includes Ron Perlman, Pato Hoffmann and Connie Britton, whose characters find themselves in an awkward triangle. I found it fascinating and topical. Moreover, the ending surprised me. If you like to see people actually fighting the elements, this is the movie for you. This cold gem has a lot going for it and will leave you with a lot to chew on as the credits roll.

A snowstorm cuts a small town off from the outside world, while a mysterious stranger appears just in time to terrorize the community. This miniseries is my favorite Stefan King film since my childhood. Storm of the century it had nothing to do with being so cruel on television. The murders are fantastic, the youth are in grave danger, and King’s iconic use of small-town chaos as a battery for evil is well captured. I was as obsessed with the gossip as I was with the fear. I sometimes randomly quote lines from Tim Daly and Colm Feore’s characters because this miniseries is permanently etched in my memory. If you’re serious about embracing your chillers era, set aside a Saturday and start here. It is insanely beautiful and has one of the most disturbing endings I had ever seen at the time. I still want justice for Michael Anderson 25 years later.

A small group of townspeople become trapped in a snowstorm while a werewolf feeds on their community members. It felt like we could use a few chuckles after all the heavy movies listed in this streaming guide. While Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, Harvey Guillén and the crew provide the fun, don’t get too comfortable. The sudden deaths are fun and lead you on a journey you never saw coming. This horror-comedy video game adaptation of a werewolf whodunnit was a pleasant surprise. Whenever I see all the subgenres and categories, I know it shouldn’t be nearly as good as it turned out. That’s one of the many reasons I want Jos Ruben and Mishna Wolff to collaborate again. I often revisit this chiller, but in winter it feels better with a warm drink.
Which chillers are you watching this weekend? We need to exchange titles and get cozy @misssharai.
